Dr. Harris has lived a story that most people never get the chance to rewrite. His journey is a powerful reminder that your past does not define your future—your decisions do. Through resilience, discipline, and purpose, he transformed adversity into impact, and his story will challenge you to do the same! —Antonio Webb, MD, Spine Surgeon, Author, Keynote Speaker
From the moment I read Dr. Harris' application for residency until today, I have seen his grit, passion, skill, and faith sustain and grow. James is a remarkable man, and his life story serves as an inspiration to me and to anyone who knows him. —Pam Lipsett, MD, MHPE, MCCM, Assistant Dean of Assessment and Evaluation, Warfield M Firor Endowed Professorship in SurgeryDr. James Harris takes us on what is, at times, a harrowing journey from childhood struggle in a crackhouse to glory as a surgeon at one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world. Harris' life story reads like a thriller, peppered with perseverance, tragedy, diligence, and love— but all rooted in faith. Readers will be inspired by what is possible in life (while accruing many lessons from how the 'hood' operates to learning how the medical fields work) with passion, spirit, and gratitude throughout.— Dina Ruiz Eastwood, Writer/Media Personality
He is one of the "Best of the best." —John L. Cameron, MD, the Alfred Blalock Distinguished Service Professor of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of MedicineThis offers an inspiring look at not only my father's story, but also the socioeconomic turmoil that persists for far too many young Black men in America. A life not of choice but of happenstance, and faith, are integral parts of my father's story. It is through God's grace that he is able to confront the demons of his past. —James "Tre" Harris Salas, Author
I know Dr. Harris personally, and his story is one I'll never forget. It's honest, inspiring, and full of hope for anyone who wonders if their life can change direction. This book reminds us that with God's help, your story can still be redeemed. His life didn't start with opportunity, but it didn't end there either. What God has done in his story, from poverty and trouble to becoming a leading physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a life of impact, is both honest and inspiring. This book will help you believe that your life can still become something meaningful. —Pastor Loren Hicks

This memoir is a must-read for anyone striving to fulfill their highest potential. I've known Dr. Harris since our troubled years in high school, and it's been truly inspiring to witness his remarkable transformation. Dr. Harris' story is a powerful testament to what can be achieved against all odds through redemptive opportunity, relentless perseverance, and faith.

Dr. James Harris' story is amazing. 'Not Who I Once Was' not only has the makings of a blockbuster movie, it is a testament to a person who wanted/needed to rise above. The key to James' story was his surrendering his all to Jesus and allowing Him to be the Lord of his life. Jesus came alongside James and helped him become the husband, father, and surgeon he is today. Thank you, Dr. Harris, for making your amazing story public. —Pastor Pat McGeheeJames Harris arrived at Johns Hopkins with one of the most extraordinary stories of resilience I had ever heard. He was intellectually sharp, genuinely curious, and possessed a surgeon's instinct that no training program can teach. In addition to working side by side in the hospital, our families shared many Thanksgivings together. Watching him and his wife move through the world, hand in hand, steady through every hardship, it became clear that his strength was never his alone. —Malcolm V. Brock, MD, Professor of Surgery, Author and former Rhodes Scholar

From Gang Life to General Surgeon at Johns Hopkins
This is a mini-documentary produced by Dr. Antonio Webb about my unusual path to becoming a surgeon. Dr. Webb visited my home town of Fresno and we went to sites I had not been to since I was a teenager. We had a special guest, my friend George who survived being shot in the head while we were together and visited the site where it all went down.
