Not Who I Once Was: My Unusual Path To Becoming A Surgeon (Coming soon)
My Story: A Journey of Struggle, Faith, and Redemption
I grew up surrounded by poverty and addiction. The challenges that gripped my family were not unique in our community, but becoming a teenage father added another layer of responsibility and hardship at a time when I was still trying to find my own way. I don't share these parts of my story for sympathy; I share them because they are the foundation of who I am. It was in these moments of pain, fear, and uncertainty that I began to experience the grace of God working in my life. By His grace, I found the strength to push forward. What the world saw as obstacles, God used as opportunities for growth. With resilience and an unshakable determination planted deep within me, I defied the expectations stacked against me. I poured myself into my education, leaning on faith when the road felt too long. Against the odds, I became a surgeon- something many, including myself at times, thought might never be possible.
Today, my purpose extends far beyond the operating room. I'm deeply committed to reaching back and lifting up others who come from underserved communities like the one I was raised in. I want young people to see that their current situation doesn't have to be their final destination. I want those who have never experienced poverty or discrimination to understand the unseen battles so many of us face. My journey is proof that God can take what was meant for harm and use it for good. My story stands as a testament that where you come from does not dictate how far you can go.
Raising a family has been one of the most humbling parts of my journey. When my son suffered a traumatic brain injury, I was brought to my knees. But even in that dark valley, God was there, reshaping my heart, teaching me deeper empathy, patience, and the true meaning of love and unity. That experience changed me- not just as a father or doctor, but as a man of faith.
This memoir is not just about me; it's about the power of transformation, the strength found in surrender, and the undeniable grace of God that carried me every step of the way.
